# What is the Lum Network ?

## The blockchain dedicated to mass adoption

The Lum Network is a **fast, secure and sustainable open-source blockchain protocol** from the Cosmos Ecosystem. It is powered by the **LUM token**, its native crypto-asset.

Lum comes from the word “light” and expresses the **value created by and for community members** throughout their online and offline experiences.

## History

The founding team, led by Sarah-Diane Eck, has been working on blockchain mainstream use cases since 2017. She realized that people have become increasingly demanding when it comes to the way they consume ; and more specifically that consumers want more transparency, collaboration and recognition.

Lum Network was launched in 2017 under the name Sandblock, one of the first and most advanced blockchain rewards projects. Initially based on the Ethereum blockchain using an ERC20 Token, Sandblock’s protocol introduced the first features aiming to standardize the way companies interact with their customers. **The Lum Network was then focused on helping companies face this paradigm shift by providing the decentralized tools required for this task.**

Over the years, the team has been working on the development of the technology and the business, with a two-fold structure:

* on the **application side**, a focus on User Experience and integration to existing processes in the band loyalty industry. It lead to a successful exit in early 2021 for *Lumki*, acquired by *Skeepers* the European leader in the customer engagement space.  The application has since been rebranded as *Skeepers Rewards.*
* on the **blockchain infrastructure side**, a major change happened when the project migrated to the Cosmos Ecosystem. The mainnet was launched in December 2021. \
  At the same time, the *Lum Foundation* was created. This Swiss non-profit entity steers the development of the Lum Ecosystem.

Since then, the scope has been expanded to offer even more mainstream services to the community that supported the team in this journey. \
In order to simplify the access to the projects of the Interchain, ***DFract*****&#x20;was launched at the Cosmoverse 2022**. It is the first index for the Interchain. <br>
